About Hay & Equipment Sheds

Farm Storage That Protects Your Investment — Every Season

Hay and equipment sheds aren't just storage — they're critical infrastructure for farm operations. Protecting hay from moisture and weather, securing expensive machinery, and housing feed and fertiliser requires the right design and materials.

We build hay sheds with wide clear spans to maximise usable storage space, ventilation designed to keep hay dry and prevent spoilage, and optional enclosed walls when equipment or feed needs full protection from the elements.

Whether you're stacking hay for 500 head of cattle, storing a harvester and planting gear, or building a multi-purpose farm storage solution, we design and engineer every shed to suit your block, your equipment, and your farm's long-term needs. All builds are council-approved and certified for rural properties.

Wide clear spans with no internal posts. Drive straight in with machinery or stack hay with no obstructions. Perfect for fast loading and unloading.

Wide Clear Spans

Up to 15m+ spans without internal support posts. Engineered for Queensland wind and rain loads. Maximise storage without losing usable floor space.

Enclosed Options

Add side walls and roller doors to protect equipment, feed, and fertiliser from weather and theft. Flexible configurations for your specific needs.

Hay Storage Ventilation

Strategic roof venting and open-side designs to keep hay dry, prevent mould growth, and extend hay quality. Designed for Queensland humidity.

Equipment Access

Wide access points, roller doors, and side loading bays to accommodate tractors, harvesters, and large machinery. No getting stuck in tight spaces.

Low Maintenance Steel

COLORBOND® steel construction resists rust and corrosion. Built to withstand farm use, machinery traffic, and Queensland weather for decades.

Who Builds a Hay & Equipment Shed?

Our hay sheds suit a wide range of farmers and rural property owners — from small-scale hobby farms to large-scale agricultural operations on the Darling Downs.

Hay & Feed Producers

Growing and storing hay for livestock. Open-bay sheds with optional covered storage to protect bales from weather and extend hay quality through the year.

Equipment & Machinery Storage

Tractors, harvesters, planters, and other farm equipment need protected storage. We build enclosed options with wide access doors and sturdy roofing to handle machinery traffic.

Rural Property Owners

Acreage and rural blocks with varied storage needs. Whether it's feed, fertiliser, firewood, or a mix of equipment and hay, we design sheds that earn their place on your property.

Got Questions?

Hay & Equipment Shed FAQs

Here are the most common questions farmers ask about hay and equipment sheds. If you need more detail, give us a call or send through an enquiry — we're happy to help.

What is the best size for a hay shed?

The ideal size depends on your storage volume and machinery. For hay storage, most farms benefit from sheds 12m-18m wide and 15m-25m deep. A 15m x 20m shed comfortably stores 500+ small bales or 200+ large bales. For equipment storage, consider the largest machine you'll park inside — a harvester needs 12m+ width. If you're storing both hay and equipment, we often recommend separate bays or a hybrid design with an open hay area and enclosed machinery section. We'll help you calculate the right size based on your stocking rate and equipment list.

Do hay sheds need building approval?

Yes, most hay and equipment sheds over 10m wide or certain floor areas require building approval from your local council (Toowoomba Regional Council, Lockyer Valley, or your local authority). The good news is that we handle the entire approval process for you, including engineering certification, council applications, and all documentation. Rural properties in non-town planning scheme areas may have different requirements, but we'll advise you on what's needed and manage the process from start to finish.

What is the widest clear span available?

We engineer hay sheds with clear spans up to 15m+ depending on your site conditions, wind load requirements, and local council standards. Wider spans mean more usable storage space without internal posts getting in the way — perfect for modern machinery and stacking hay bales efficiently. The wider the span you need, the more important the engineering becomes. We'll work with structural engineers to design the most cost-effective solution for your requirements while meeting all Queensland wind and load standards.

Are open or enclosed hay sheds better?

Both have advantages. Open-bay sheds are more affordable and provide excellent air circulation, which keeps hay dry and prevents mould — critical in humid Queensland climates. They work great for hay storage and are easy to load/unload machinery. Enclosed sheds protect hay and equipment from direct rain and UV damage, extending hay quality and protecting expensive machinery from weather and theft. Many farmers use a hybrid approach: open bays for hay, enclosed sections for equipment and feed. We'll help you decide what works best for your climate, equipment, and budget.

What materials are used in hay and equipment sheds?

We build with COLORBOND® steel roofing and cladding, which resists rust and corrosion in farm conditions. Steel frames are engineered and painted. Post options include treated timber posts (for open-bay designs) or steel posts (for maximum durability). Foundations are typically engineered concrete slabs (for equipment) or post footings (for lighter hay-only sheds). Optional extras include roller doors, side walls in zincalume or COLORBOND, skylights for natural light, and ventilation louvers. All materials are chosen for durability in Queensland's climate and farm use conditions.

Can I add on to an existing hay shed?

Absolutely. Many farmers expand their storage as their operation grows. We can design additions that match your existing shed in style and materials, create separate bays connected by shelters, or build a completely new section. The key is assessing your existing foundation, roof connections, and council approval for the expansion. If your original shed is built to our standards, additions are straightforward. Contact us with photos and measurements of your current shed, and we'll discuss expansion options and costs.
